Stage 4: The Correction Problem
Here's where things get particularly difficult. By the time a hoax is fact-checked and debunked, it has typically already reached its peak audience. - Platform design: Algorithmic changes that prioritise accuracy signals over pure engagement metrics.
The Individual Responsibility
Platform-level solutions matter, but they're incomplete without individual habits. Every time you pause before sharing, verify before forwarding, and apply the same scepticism to content you agree with as to content you don't — you're reducing the spread of misinformation by one node in the network. At scale, that matters.
The goal is not to become paralysed by distrust, but to develop calibrated judgement: sharing freely when you have good reason to believe something is accurate, and pausing when you don't.
